World Sexual Health Day

World Sexual Health Day, September 4, 2019

On September 4, 2019, Triple-X First Director Anna Smith found this poster at a London Drugs in Vancouver and took a photo and emailed it. The link to the London Drugs website listed on the poster featured a link to a press release from the World Health Organization that proclaimed for World Sexual Health Day — September 4 — WHO is developing a global instrument to measure sexual behaviour and sexual health outcomes. The grand prize was that 10-20 people get to participate in a survey "hackathon" and will get credit.

"WHO is also using World Sexual Health Day to ask for inputs from the global community to develop a standard, globally recognised instrument that can measure sexual practices, behaviours and sexual health related outcomes."

Andrew Sorfleet prepared this submission on behalf of Triple-X in time for the deadline, October 24, 2019: Submission to World Health Organization Open call for feedback to develop a population-representative sexual health survey instrument.

"Research conclusions often ultimately define sex workers as "having exchanged goods or money for sex." The lack of distinction between formal and informal contexts for transactional sex has been a flaw for more than 30 years that has been recognized all along. The development of a WHO global sexual health survey instrument is an opportunity to finally address this inadequacy in surveys identifying commercial sex in order to assess risk for STBBI transmission."

On November 28, 2019, we received an email on behalf of the steering committee thanking us for our submission to the "WHO/HRP open call for ideas to develop a standardized Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey Instrument." They received a total of 175 entries which went through 3-5 rounds of review and 18 entries were selected to participate in the Hackathon. "While you have not be selected to attend the hackathon meeting we may be reaching out to you in due course to discuss some innovative ideas in your application."
